The
motto for the serenade concert of the Vienna Concert Verein on
August 10 at Ossiach Abbey was '1815 (Congress of Vienna) - 1915
(First World War) - 2015 (Crisis in Europe)'. Accordingly, music
composed in the respective eras was performed under the
masterful direction of Wolfgang Dörner. The range extended from
Beethoven (2nd movement of his 8th Symphony) to Lanner (court
ball dances), Johann Strauss, Ravel (Rigaudon from 'Le Tombeau
de Couperin') and Prokofiev (3rd movement from his 'Classical
Symphony'). The main work of this serenade was the premiere of
the piano concerto 'Deep Blue' by Robert Pobitschka, with the
composer as the soloist. Pobitschka was inspired by the poem of
the same name by Fran Eve Wright, which is printed in the
program booklet, and whose atmosphere the composer brought to
life in a colorful and expressive way.
Sound textures alternated with repetitions and an almost
percussive rhythm in the last movement. In the performance, the
pianist's playing combined strength and poetry (2nd movement),
and his virtuosity never got in the way of the subtle tonality.
Contributing to the success of this premiere was also the mental
agility of the musicians of the Vienna Concert Verein, who,
under Dörner's baton, conveyed the work's nuanced dynamics with
naturally appearing exploratory enthusiasm and precision, and
were warmly applauded by the delighted audience.
